We are analyzing hundreds of sutures and other metrics of ammonites, gastropods, and bivalves from the Zinsmeister Collection housed at PRI and other collections of Upper Cretaceous fossils from the Antarctic Peninsula to understand microevolution in the Late Cretaceous and impacts on invertebrate fauna from climate change.

We are examining the role of soft-tissue specimens in sclerochronological processes and septal organogenesis.

Using primarily the LLS and Richardson methods, we measure the change to the fractal complexity of ammonite sutures over time, in addition to other components of septal geometry.

How can we assign phenotypic value to ammonite sutures, and what might this tell us about periods of stasis versus directional evolution in ammonoid lineages?
We examine fractal patterns in other mollusks to phylogenetically bracket some of this change.
